The pink plastic cap is used to put the cartridge back together after regeneration - the original cap cannot be reused after being lifted and removed. The head cover in an inkjet printer is profiled to fit perfectly and protect the element. The plastic ink cap, next to the inkjet head tape, provides additional protection for the cartridge.
